Best Weekends to Shop Garage Sales

During the summertime, it's hard to find a weekend when there aren't a ton of garage sales going on in every neighborhood, especially in such a downturned economy.  However, if you don't want to go out every single weekend and would prefer to stick to one or two weeks out of the year, here are some tips on picking the best times to swoop in and get some great steals.

A weekend spent on garage sales.Springtime sales may give you a ton of unusually popular items, because it's about this time that people get spring cleaning fever and start tearing through all their stuff, eliminating all but the essentials.  Gently used items you don't need to buy new can be found this time of year, and people are often more eager to get rid of something than to get a good bargain on it.  Spring is also good for fall and winter clothing, since new fashions for the coming year come out in the spring and people are making space in their closets.

Weekends after holidays are great, because people have already gotten in their vacations the week before and can now buckle down to focus on hosting a yard sale.  You will have significantly more competition, because all of your fellow shoppers will also be back from vacation, but you won't have to worry about fewer sales due to people being out of town.  Hosts will also likely be more congenial, since they just got a little R&R, so you won't have to worry about encountering nasty hosts quite as often.

This means that the weekend after the 4th of July and the weekend after Labor Day are perfect for your annual saling trip.  People often take some extra time off work for both of these holidays, and when they get back they know they need to refocus on life; decluttering their home space may be just the thing they need.  Be sure to prepare yourself for these weekends by not spending your cash for a couple of weeks beforehand, and making a list of items you need so you know what to definitely bargain for while you're out.

Ask around your neighborhood to see if anyone is planning a sale soon, and if two or more seem to coincide, you can take that as a pretty good sign that it'll be a regionally good garage sale weekend.  Keep an eye on the ten-day forecast; although it isn't always very accurate, it can show you some more promising weekends a week and a half in advance.

For me I prefer weekends after holidays since I have a lot of choices to where garage sale I would go. Even if there are a lot of things to choose from and sometimes it overwhelms you, I don't have a problem since I'm a keen observer and have the knack to get quality items.

I really love garage sales and finding new things under these baskets especially my neighbors. Last spring, I got a scarf and and a coat for the winter. I even got an old cup of tea with all these dwarf carvings around it. Happy Garage Sales everyone..

Hi fellow garage sale enthusiasts. I'v been going to garage sales since i was a kid and up to now that I'm already 30 years old. I find some free time to go out and explore garage sales because you can never expect what you could get from these. I like the feeling that you're going to unfamiliar places and going through things that may be priceless.

Garage Sales are the best. You don't only get valuable items, you gain knowledge on the varied history of those things. You also meet different people with varied personalities that you could be friends in the future. It's always a win-win situation for all; you buy cool stuff and the sellers would gain income. I like to call my-self as a "picker" because I go through old stuff of different people and somehow bid/ offer them for that particular object. See you in Garage Sales...

Ever ran into a "close fisted" seller in a garage sale? Cant understand them, Why did they even start one if they are reluctant to sell their belongings... GRrrrrr

Welcome to the world of treasure hunting or should I say, garage sale. You could find just anything you can think of, even the most unexpected things can be found in such events. Ranging from your regular household items like cups and kitchen utensils to old/rare war memorabilias could be bought.

My most memorable purchase was an small box carved with old language that the guy said were jewish. Had a spark that made it interesting and at the same time elegant. There could be a mystery behind that box. I'll just have to find out, hope its not one of those in horror movies Smile

The perfect time or season to go garage shopping is NOW. You can't wait on specific times of the year to go garage shopping. If there's a nearby garage sale opening then go grab the opportunity and see what you could find. Don't hold back because you're scared to fail or buy a bad quality item. What's worse is just sitting there in your house doing nothing. Might as well spend your time wisely. Just remember, "There's seven days of a week and SOMEDAY isn't one of them" so go out there and shop Smile hope this helps a bit.

Great to have this sales around. I love those coats used for the winter cause I'm a bit of a fashion fanatic. I also like to innovate and make my own accessories from those old chairs and just about anything I can think of. You can have your own fashion sense and need not spend much on it. Even the simplest strings or cords could be made into an elegant necklace, you just need beads, maybe a couple of old wires and a little bit of creativity. Just think outside the box.

How lucky am I that I met my love of my life in a garage sale. I was joining garage sales here and there. I would have not expect that I would meet my wife in these kind of events. Not the fairy tale setup or meeting place you'd expect. Normally, it would be in a class, a restaurant , a park or at a social gathering. But as they say, love comes when you least expect it. Now were happily married with our 3 beautiful kids.

Congratulations Doug!!! You've got quite a deal from just joining a garage and eventually meeting your wife. Cool story Bro. I wonder when I would meet my wife, maybe she's also in a garage sale somewhere. I now join more and more garage sales hoping to meet my future wife Smile see you.

Personally, I like to shop in garage sales late in the year preferably the -ber months because there's a spirit of generosity with Christmas approaching. Hosts can be flexible and friendly than they were few months ago. You can bargain easily and you can spend all your savings from january up to now to find a great item to display in your home. Also, you can buy and sell. You can buy cheap items that you think you could sell for a slightly higher price to some cash. Either way, shop during the BER months. Trust me, its easier Smile

I can relate with you Sofia. Here's a piece of unsolicited advice, build rapport first before engaging into the business matter. You can never close a good deal if you go directly to the point, you need to have a few detours. Talk to the host, make him comfortable with you around, start with a smile, a handshake to let him know your a good folk. Your goal should be to feel like you're friends already for a long time. I don't expect you to do it perfectly the first time around since you're still a beginner.

If the situation presents itself, grab and own the opportunity to shop at a garage sale. It's harder if you have "what ifs" in your mind rather than failing at a garage sale. Its better to fail in the garage sale because at least, you tried and gave it your best shot. You will never know what will happen in that garage sale if you don't go. Take a leap of faith.

The best weekend to shop in a garage sale is when you have $$$$$$ cash. It's the first thing you have to consider if you're planning to shop. If you're dedicated to really push through with a limited budget then feel free to do so. Just make preparations to save some money to spend in the garage sale. You could prepare a packed lunch and bring water jugs to prevent avoid spending money for refreshments in the sale. Take the bus or the train to save gasoline and choose the right garage sale for you. Read the categories of items that will be for sale and see if it matches your needs.

For me, i agree that the best weekends to have a garage sale is during springtime and after holidays.. Since there are some things that are just stored at our rooms, during springtime cleaning, we get to see or remember that we even have this particular item with us since we didn't get to see it often.. we get rid of extra clutters in our rooms and we get to earn money from some things that are of value through garage sales.. After holidays, we get to sell  all our extra belongings and some other clothes for another season..

I am very fond of garage sales.. I've picked up some items that are really worth it in garage sales.. It's amazing!! I get to use and hone my talents in fashion and in designing since I get to mix and match pieces together; whether it may be clothes or furniture..

The best time to shop is during season changes. Like when winter or spring ends, we tend to sell our old clothes and items so that's where you want to be. They're just trying to get rid of clutter and have some cash maybe to buy new clothes for the new season. You can bargain easily because they are looking to sell items immediately even for low prices.

When there are garage sales, ensure that you're the first one to arrive so you can choose from the entire display without having competition to fight with. You can get the best items because if you're late, there's no chance for you to get the best items because they're surely sold by the time you arrive.

@aaron Yeah, you're correct than your chances are higher to meet your wife if you join more garage sales but it is not a guarantee to success Tong don't get your hopes too high, maybe the girl you're looking for is just beside you or in front of you... you just don't realize it yet.
